I remember this issue when I came across with it.
Then, I set this parameter 2051 to "NO" and from then onwards, whenever I do search for any user e.g abc*.. the search list gets populated with the similar ID's (starting with abc) and when I select for the desired user ID, the highlighted user ID replaces the character which I had put for the search criteria.
It's strange though, but it worked for me. Hope this would work for you as well.
